In brief: Meta Advantage+ campaigns let Meta’s AI choose the audience, placements and budget split across ad sets. There are three end-to-end types: sales (formerly shopping), app and leads. For the leads objective, Advantage+ is on by default for eligible accounts. Meta’s help page says a campaign stays Advantage+ On with one campaign budget, audience details used as suggestions and all placements selected; you can raise the minimum age up to 25 or exclude a custom audience without turning it off, and account-level controls do not affect the Advantage+ state. It usually turns Off when a setting is used as a hard limit instead of a suggestion. Meta says Advantage+ audience isn’t recommended for retargeting, and some Advantage+ creative enhancements may be on by default. The owner still decides the area, the total budget, the offer, the ad, the lead form and how fast leads are called back. Kosmonk IT Pvt Ltd, a digital marketing agency in Ahmedabad, runs Meta ads for brands.
Meta Ads Manager is the tool where you create and run Facebook and Instagram ads. When you open it now, a lot is already set up for you. For a leads campaign, Meta picks who sees the ad, where it shows and how the budget is split. That setup is called Advantage+. Many owners use it without quite knowing what it does, so this guide explains Meta Advantage+ campaigns in plain words.
It covers what Meta takes over, what you still decide, and when the automatic setup suits a local business.
Key Takeaways
- Meta's AI chooses the audience, placements and budget split, and can adjust creative.
- For the leads objective, Advantage+ is on by default for eligible accounts.
- You still choose the location, budget, offer, ad and lead form.
- Raising the minimum age to 25 is fine, but a hard upper age limit can switch Advantage+ off.
What Are Meta Advantage+ Campaigns?
Meta Advantage+ campaigns are ad campaigns where Meta’s AI handles most of the setup. Meta picks the audience, the placements and the budget for each ad set. An ad set is a group of ads that share one audience and budget. You still set the goal, the location, the total budget and the ad itself.
Meta’s Advantage+ overview calls it “a suite of products” that uses “AI and automation” to improve results. It comes in two kinds. End-to-end campaigns apply AI to the audience, placements and budget together. Single-step tools automate just one part. Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ campaign budget are both examples, and each can be used on its own.
There are three end-to-end campaign types:
- Advantage+ sales campaigns, for online sales. Meta says these used to be called Advantage+ shopping campaigns.
- Advantage+ app campaigns, for app installs.
- Advantage+ leads campaigns, for enquiries through forms, calls or messages.
Most local businesses we talk to in Ahmedabad want enquiries, so this guide is about the leads version. For what Meta ads cost in the first place, see our guide to Meta ads cost in India.
What Does Meta Automate, and What Do You Still Control?
Meta automates three main things: who sees the ad, where it appears and how the budget is split. It can also change the creative. You still control the business side: the area, the total budget, the offer, the ad, the lead form and the follow-up. Those are the parts that most affect whether a lead becomes a customer.
Audience. Meta’s help page on Advantage+ audience says it uses Meta’s AI “to find the audience for your Meta ad campaign”. It learns from things like past leads or sales and how people reacted to your earlier ads. It also uses your Meta pixel data, which comes from a small piece of code on your website that tells Meta what visitors do.
Budget. With Advantage+ campaign budget, you set one budget for the whole campaign. Meta then moves the money between your ad sets as it goes, towards the ones doing best. You can set a lowest or highest spend for an ad set to limit how far the money moves.
Placements. By default, all placements are selected. That lets Meta show the ad wherever it finds the best results across its apps.
Creative. Advantage+ creative can make automatic changes to your images, videos and text. Meta’s help page on creative enhancements says: “Some enhancements may be turned on by default, but you can turn them off at any time.” So check the preview of every ad before it goes live, and make sure it still looks like your brand.
Why Does Your Campaign Say "Advantage+ On" or "Off"?
Ads Manager marks each campaign Advantage+ On or Off, based on how tightly you set it up. Meta’s Advantage+ leads page says leads campaigns start in the On state. It adds: “Narrowing your settings too much will trigger Advantage+ Off.” Meta also says the setup is “Available now for eligible accounts”, so some accounts may not see it yet.
Meta’s help page on what turns Advantage+ on and off explains each part:
- Budget: it stays On with one campaign budget. It turns Off if you have several ad sets, each with its own budget and no campaign budget.
- Audience: it stays On when your audience details are used as suggestions. A suggestion is a starting point that the AI is allowed to go beyond.
- Hard limits: a hard limit is a setting Meta must stick to exactly. It usually turns Off when you use “Further limit the reach of your ads” and untick “Use as a suggestion”.
- Minimum age and exclusions: Meta says you can “raise the minimum age up to 25 or exclude a custom audience without turning Advantage+ off.”
- Placements: it turns Off if you exclude placements in any ad set, or opt out of mobile or desktop.
- Account-level controls: Meta says these “will not affect your campaign’s Advantage+ state.”
So a hard upper age limit is a common reason a campaign turns Off. An example is the 45 in an age range of 25 to 45. Add that range as a suggestion instead. Do the same with custom audiences, which are lists of your own customers or website visitors. Lookalike audiences, people who resemble your customers, go in as suggestions too.
Real business limits belong in account-level controls, which are settings that apply across your whole ad account. Meta gives the example of a business that “can’t show ads to people under a certain age or send products to some countries.” A product that by law is only for adults is a fair case. A guess about who your buyers are is better added as a suggestion.
Location works in your favour. Meta’s leads page lists “Any location or language selection” among the settings that keep Advantage+ On. You can still keep a campaign to Ahmedabad or a few areas.
Do Advantage+ Campaigns Suit a Small Local Business?
Often, yes, for leads. Advantage+ campaigns suit a business that wants enquiries from a known area, has a clear offer and can call leads back fast. They are a weaker fit for showing ads again to people who already know you. They also fit badly when you need a strict audience rule that you cannot set at account level.
When it tends to fit:
- You want new enquiries, such as a clinic booking first visits or a furniture showroom wanting walk-ins.
- You serve a set area, which location targeting still allows.
- You have fresh ads to test, so Meta has more than one option to learn from.
When to think twice:
- Retargeting. Meta’s help page About Advantage+ audience says that for a retargeting campaign, “Advantage+ audience isn’t recommended.” Our guide to retargeting done properly covers how to set lists and limits for that job.
- A strict audience rule that you cannot set at account level. One example is a service that may only be shown to one group of people. A manual campaign may fit better there.
- No one to answer leads. Automation can bring enquiries, but it cannot call them back.

How Should You Set Up an Advantage+ Leads Campaign?
Start simple and let the defaults do their job, then add only what your business truly needs. Choose the leads objective, keep Advantage+ on, set your location, and add what you know about customers as suggestions. Spend most of your effort on the offer, the ad and the lead form.
Here is a made-up example to show the idea. A skincare clinic in Satellite wants first-visit bookings. It sets the campaign to Ahmedabad, adds women aged 25 to 45 as a suggestion, and runs three short reels of the clinic. Its lead form asks for the treatment, a preferred day and a phone number. The front desk calls every lead within the hour.
A sensible setup has five parts:
- Pick the leads objective and check the campaign shows Advantage+ On.
- Set the location to the areas you actually serve.
- Add what you know as suggestions. Put your likely age range, interests and any customer list in as suggestions, so Meta can still look wider.
- Give Meta two or three ads with different hooks, meaning the opening line or shot that makes people stop, so it has choices to test.
- Send leads to your team quickly, by phone or WhatsApp, and note which ones book.
Meta also suggests the conversion leads goal. This goal asks Meta to find leads who are likely to become customers. To use it, you connect your CRM, the software where you track leads, through the Conversions API. That is a link that sends your lead results back to Meta. Our guide to conversion tracking setup mistakes explains how to set that up correctly.
What Should You Watch in the Results?
Watch what the leads turn into, as well as what each one costs. A low cost per lead (CPL) means little if the leads never answer the phone. Check how many leads booked a visit or a call, which ad brought the best ones, and whether the campaign is still showing Advantage+ On.
A short weekly check covers most of it:
- Cost per lead for the week, next to the number of leads.
- Leads that booked, taken from your own team’s notes or CRM.
- The best ad, so you can make more like it.
- Where the ads ran, so you spot a placement that brings weak leads.
Check a new campaign daily, but give it about a week before you make big changes to the budget or audience. Too many big changes too soon make it hard to tell what is working.
Where to Start
Advantage+ campaigns hand the targeting work to Meta’s AI. That saves time, and it can find people you would not have picked. It helps most when you keep the parts only you can do: a clear offer, a good ad and a quick callback.
This week, check if your leads campaign says Advantage+ On or Off. If it is Off, look for a hard upper age limit or a narrow audience, and move those into suggestions. Then track which leads book.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Meta Advantage+ campaigns?
They are Meta ad campaigns where Meta’s AI chooses the audience, placements and budget split for you, and can adjust creative. There are three types: sales, app and leads. For the leads objective, Advantage+ is on by default for eligible accounts.
Can I still target only my city with Advantage+?
Yes. Meta’s leads page lists any location or language selection among the settings that keep Advantage+ on. So a campaign limited to Ahmedabad can still run as an Advantage+ leads campaign.
Why did my campaign switch to Advantage+ Off?
Usually because a setting became too narrow. Common causes are a hard upper age limit or other hard audience limit, excluded placements, or several ad sets that each have their own budget. Moving age and interests into suggestions often turns it back on.
Should I use Advantage+ for retargeting?
Meta advises against Advantage+ audience for retargeting. To reach people who already visited your site or page, a manual retargeting campaign with your own lists is usually the better fit.
Does Advantage+ make my ads for me?
No. You still provide the ads. Advantage+ creative can make automatic changes to your images, videos and text, and some of these may already be on. Check the preview of each ad before you publish it.
