In brief: A skippable in-stream ad gives the viewer a skip option after 5 seconds, so only the opening five seconds are guaranteed. Bumper ads last 5 to 6 seconds, cannot be skipped and bill on impressions through Target CPM. Non-skippable in-stream ads are 60 seconds or shorter. Video ad content has to be hosted on YouTube before the ad can point at it, while a static display image needs 1200 x 628 pixels for landscape with a 600 x 314 floor, plus a 1200 x 1200 square version. Google can also build a video at no production cost from one image, one headline and one description. Static answers the message question cheaply, and video makes a proven message louder.
Every creative discussion we have arrives at the same question. The client has budget for one thing this month, and wants to know whether it should be a video shoot or a set of images. There is a sensible answer. It depends on what you sell, how long your buyer takes to decide, and what you can afford to shoot.
Key Takeaways
- A skippable video ad can be abandoned after 5 seconds.
- Bumper ads run 5 to 6 seconds and cannot be skipped.
- Video ad content has to be hosted on YouTube.
- A display image needs at least 600 x 314 pixels.
- Google can build a video from one image and two lines.
Video Ads vs Static Ads: What Is the Real Difference?
One is a file you place, and one is a file you host. A static ad is an image with a headline attached, uploaded straight into the account. A video ad has to live on YouTube first, because Google requires video ad content to be hosted there. That hosting rule surprises a lot of people.
Google is explicit about it. Its video ad formats page says video ad content “must be hosted on YouTube”. The same page says those ads “can appear on YouTube and across websites and apps running on Google video partners”. So the video sits on a channel, and the ad points at it.
The difference that matters to your wallet is time. An image is approved once and then runs for months. A video has a script, a shoot, an edit and a round of sign-off. A weak one costs you three weeks before you learn anything.
There is a second practical difference. A static ad can be swapped on a Monday morning when last week’s numbers look wrong. A video cannot, so you are usually stuck with it until the next shoot.
Our guide to performance marketing covers how the paid formats fit together.
Which One Costs More to Make?
Video, by a wide margin. The gap is in people and time, because a shoot needs a script, a crew and an edit. A set of static ads can be built by one designer in an afternoon. In Ahmedabad that gap is the whole reason most small accounts run images first.
Put real numbers against it. A business spending ₹18,500 a month on ads cannot hand ₹40,000 to a shoot and expect the month to work. Static gets that account live this week. Video earns its place once the monthly spend is big enough that better creative moves real money.
Our guide to reel production cost in Ahmedabad lists what a shoot costs here.
There is one saving worth knowing about. A single shoot can produce the video ad, three short cut-downs and a dozen stills. Across 100+ brand accounts, the shoots that paid for themselves were the ones planned that way from the first call sheet.
The reverse order is where money disappears. A shoot booked before anybody knows which message works gives you a polished advert for an offer nobody wanted. We have rescued a few of those in Prahlad Nagar, and the footage usually ends up on the website.
How Long Should a Video Ad Be?
Short, because the viewer holds the clock. On a skippable in-stream ad, Google says “After 5 seconds, the viewer has an option to skip the ad”. Everything you need somebody to know has to land inside those five seconds. The rest of the video is for the people who stayed.
Two other formats set the length for you. Bumper ads are “non-skippable video ads lasting between 5 and 6 seconds”. Google says they “use Target CPM bidding, so you pay based on impressions”. Non-skippable in-stream ads “are 60 seconds or shorter”, with no skip button at all.
So write for the skip. Lead with the problem or the price, and say who you are while they are still there. Anything you save for the end is seen only by the few who chose to stay.
Length also decides what you can say. Five seconds holds one idea and one name. Thirty seconds holds a problem, a proof and an offer. Most brands in Ahmedabad try to fit the thirty-second version into a bumper, and the result says nothing clearly.
A useful habit is to cut one shoot into both. The long edit runs as a skippable in-stream ad, and the five-second version runs as a bumper on the same audience.
Where Does Each Format Actually Run?
Static runs across the Display Network and in feeds. Video runs on YouTube and on Google video partner sites and apps. The useful point is that each one carries its own size rules. An asset that fails those rules quietly stops serving in half the places you were promised.
Google lists the static sizes on its responsive display ad page. A landscape image should be “1200 x 628 pixels”, with a “Minimum image size: 600 x 314 pixels”. The published “Maximum file size” is “5120 KB”. The square version wants 1200 x 1200 pixels, with a 300 x 300 floor.
Supply both shapes every time. If you only give the wide file, your ad cannot fill the square slots. Those slots are a large part of the cheap inventory on a phone.
That ceiling catches people out. A photograph straight off a camera is often bigger than 5120 KB, so compress it before you upload. It makes no visible difference at display sizes.
The text side has limits too. A short headline is “at least 1, or up to 5 headlines, of 30 characters or fewer”. A long headline runs to “90 characters or fewer”. Our guide to ad copy that gets clicked covers how to use all five.
Google Can Turn Your Images Into a Video
Hardly any account uses it. Google says on its auto-generated video page that “automatically generated videos are available as an advanced format option”. It builds a short video out of the images, logos and text you already uploaded. The cost is nothing.
The requirement is small. Google says you “need to add at least one landscape image, one headline, and one description to your responsive display ad”. Most accounts already hold more than that.
It does fail sometimes, and Google publishes the reasons:
- Low image quality, which Google describes as “blurred images, and images containing too much text”.
- Unacceptable content, meaning “racist or obscene images”.
- Text and logo on border. Google warns that images with text or logos near the edge “cannot be combined into auto-generated videos”.
- Duplicate images, or multiple images that are too similar. Four versions of one photograph give it nothing to work with.
- Very long words requiring text wrapping.
Read that list and a theme appears. The setting rewards clean pictures with space around the edges, which is also what makes a strong static ad.
Video Ads vs Static Ads: Which Should You Start With?
Static, in almost every account under ₹50,000 a month. It gets you live, it shows you which message works, and it costs a fraction of a shoot. Then you build the video around the message that already proved itself, which is a far safer way to spend ₹40,000.
In 10+ years of running paid accounts from Ahmedabad, small accounts get more from one extra static test than from better production. Below roughly ₹50,000 a month the limiting factor is how many messages you have tried. Static lets you try several in the time a shoot takes to book.
The spend side decides more of this than the creative side does. Our guide to Google Ads cost in India explains how the daily budget rule works, which matters most when the budget is small.
Where to Start
One thing to hold on to. Static buys you answers, and video makes a good answer louder. Do them in that order. A shoot built on a line you have tested is money far better spent, because you know it works.
This week, upload both image shapes, fill all five short headlines, and switch on auto-generated video. None of that costs anything. If your pictures are clean and have space at the edges, that is all it needs. You get a video ad with no shoot at all.
Book the shoot later, once you know which line people like.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do video ads perform better than static ads?
For some products, and the honest test is whether movement adds information. A sofa bed opening out, a clinic treatment room, a hotel view from the balcony: all of those gain from video. A price list or a service offer usually does not, and a clean image will carry it for a fraction of the cost.
Can I run a video ad without a YouTube channel?
No. Google requires video ad content to be hosted on YouTube. So the file has to be uploaded to a channel before the ad can point at it. The upload can be unlisted, which keeps it off your public page while the campaign runs.
How short can a video ad be?
Five seconds. Bumper ads are built for exactly that, lasting between 5 and 6 seconds with no skip button, and they bill on impressions through Target CPM. Many brands shoot one bumper from the same session that produced their longer ad.
How many images should I upload for a display ad?
Both shapes at minimum, so a 1200 x 628 landscape file and a 1200 x 1200 square one. Add a few genuinely different pictures beyond that. Near-identical versions of the same photograph are one of the reasons Google gives for an auto-generated video failing.
Does the same creative work on both Meta and Google?
Partly, though the pacing differs and the fatigue arrives at different speeds. A Meta audience sees creative far more often, so it tires quickly. Our guide to Meta ads cost in India covers how repetition pushes your cost up.
