In brief: Most of local SEO has no price tag. Google says creating a Business Profile and listing your business is free. Claiming your directory listings costs nothing either, in our experience. What you pay an agency for is hours, and the hours are set by your locations, your starting state and how crowded your category is.
Ask three agencies what local SEO costs and you will get three answers, none of them close. One quotes a setup fee. One quotes a monthly retainer. One asks what you are spending now, which is its own kind of answer.
The confusing part is that the tool at the centre of it all costs nothing. Google says so in plain words on its own page. So what exactly is the money buying?
Local SEO costs in India split into a free part and a paid part. This guide covers both, what an agency month actually contains, and how to hold two quotes side by side.
Key Takeaways
- Google says "creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free".
- What you pay for is hours, set by your locations, your starting state and your category.
- Ask whether a quote includes tax, because some agencies quote with it and some without.
- 1 shop and 3 branches are different jobs at different prices.
- A cheap quote drops the watching and reporting first, so ask what is included.
Why Do Local SEO Costs in India Vary So Much?
Because the work is sized by your situation. There is no menu. A dental clinic in Prahlad Nagar with a claimed profile and matching listings is a small job. A dealership with branches on S.G. Highway, Maninagar and Bopal is three jobs wearing one name.
Each branch needs its own profile, its own photos and its own flow of reviews. The price follows the hours, and the hours follow the mess.
Competition sets the rest. Google says local results “are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity” (tips to improve your local ranking). Popularity is the part you have to earn, and a category with thirty rivals inside two kilometres is harder work than one with four. That is our read.
So the honest answer to “what does it cost” is another question. How many locations, how bad is the current state, and how crowded is your category? Any quote given before those three are answered is a guess dressed as a number.
Which Parts of Local SEO Cost You Nothing?
More of it than most owners expect. The most useful thing you own in local search costs nothing, and Google says it is free on two separate pages. Its Business Profile page answers the question directly: “Yes, creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free” (Business Profile).
Its help centre says much the same. With a Business Profile “you can manage how your business shows up on Maps and Search at no charge” (get started).
Claiming your listings on the big Indian directories is free too, in our experience, and so is asking a customer for a review. The money question is only ever who does the work.
The times and the costs above are what we see, with one exception. The free line against the profile is Google’s own wording.
What Do Local SEO Services Cost in India?
Across the accounts we run, a monthly local SEO retainer usually lands between ₹15,000 and ₹50,000. A one-off profile setup with no ongoing work sits lower, around ₹8,000 to ₹15,000. Those are our own observed ranges. They are neither a rate card nor market data, so use them as a rough anchor and nothing more.
What moves you up that range is rarely glamorous. More locations, a category with heavy competition, or listings that contradict each other. What moves you down is a clean starting point and a single address.
A profile Google has removed from the map is worse than any of those. Getting it back means making your case and waiting. In our experience none of that time buys you anything new, so you pay once to fix it and again to catch up.
Compare that against the other retainers you may already be paying. Our breakdown of social media marketing costs in Ahmedabad sets out market ranges for that side, if you want a second reference point.
What Are You Paying For Month After Month?
Hours, spread across four jobs that never finish. Nothing here is clever, and none of the four is a one-off. It is the sort of work that quietly stops the moment nobody is paid to do it. That is the whole reason it is charged by the month.
Listings. Keeping your name, address and phone the same everywhere, and fixing the ones that drift. Our guide to local citations in India covers which directories earn the effort.
Reviews. Asking, in a way Google permits, then replying to what arrives. The asking is the part most businesses never make routine, and our guide on how to get Google reviews sets out the rules.
The profile itself. Hours, photos, services, posts and the fields that go stale when something in the business changes. Our guide to Google Business Profile optimization lists what a complete one holds.
Watching and reporting. Checking where you show up, making sure your details have not been changed, and telling you what moved. This is the part that vanishes first from a cheap quote.
The Costs That Turn Up Later
Three of them, and none tends to appear in the first email. They are ordinary parts of the job that sit outside the line marked local SEO. Nobody mentions them until the invoice arrives, and by then you have already agreed the fee.
Tax. An agency with a GST number charges tax on the work. Some quote a figure with the tax in it and some quote it separately, which is exactly why you have to ask. Two quotes are not comparable when one includes it and one leaves it off.
Photography. A profile with three dim phone photos looks shut. Somebody has to shoot the place properly, once, and that is either your Sunday or a photographer’s invoice.
Website work. Local SEO leans on your own site for the address block, the area pages and the contact details. If the site cannot be edited without a developer, that is a separate line. Our guide to website costs in Ahmedabad covers what that runs to.
One last item, and it is not a cost at all. Google’s policy rules out offering “payment, discounts, free goods and/or services” in exchange for a review (prohibited and restricted content). That rule is about what you offer a customer. Paying somebody to ask your customers properly is ordinary work. A guaranteed number of reviews is where we would stop reading. We have never seen a count promised without something behind it that the rule forbids.
How Do You Compare Two Local SEO Quotes?
Line by line, on what each one actually includes. Two quotes that both say “local SEO, monthly” can cover very different amounts of work. The label tells you nothing, and a proposal will not tell you either unless you ask.
Four questions separate them quickly. How many directory listings do you touch, and which ones? How many locations does this cover? Who replies to reviews, your team or theirs? And what arrives at the end of the month, a dashboard or a written note?
Ask for the answers in writing. A proposal naming the directories it will touch is a different product from one that says “directory submissions”. Only one of the two can be checked at month end.
The cheaper quote is not automatically the worse one. It is usually the smaller one, and small is fine if your starting point is clean and you only have one address. What you want to avoid is paying an agency rate for a job you could write down in five lines.
When Does Doing It Yourself Cost Less?
When you have one address, a tidy profile and a quiet category. Setting up a Business Profile is an hour of careful typing. Claiming the ten or so listings that matter is an evening or two. Asking customers for reviews is a message you send anyway.
One evening covers the first pass. Claim the profile, set the category, fill the hours and the phone number, upload six decent photos, then claim JustDial and your own trade’s directory. The rest of the listings can wait for the next evening. That first pass is worth doing yourself if you have the evening spare.
It stops being worth your own time at three points. More than one branch, because every task multiplies. Listings that already disagree with each other, because untangling those is slow and dull. And a category where you can see rivals moving, because a month of nobody doing the upkeep is a month they gain on you.
Most owners we meet start on their own, get the profile live, then hand it over once the monthly upkeep starts slipping. That is a sensible order, and in our experience it costs less than hiring on day one.
Where to Start This Week
Do the free part first, before you ask anyone for a price. Open your Business Profile, fix the hours, the category and the phone number, and see how it looks. Give it two weeks before you judge anything at all.
Then get two or three quotes and put the four questions above to each one. You will learn more from how they answer than from the numbers themselves.
If you want a second opinion first, our local SEO team will look at your profile and tell you what actually needs doing. Talk to us and we will be straight about whether it is worth paying for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a cheaper option than a monthly retainer?
Yes, a one-off setup. Somebody fixes the profile, cleans the main listings, and hands it back for you to maintain. It suits a single location in a quiet category. It suits nobody who wants the rankings watched, because watching is the part that only happens if it is paid for.
Does paying more get me to the top of the map?
Not from Google, no. Two different questions hide in that one, so take them apart. Start with buying position. Google’s own page on local ranking is blunt: “There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google”. On paying an agency, more money buys more hours, and hours only help where the work helps. Anyone promising you a position is selling something Google says does not exist.
Should I pay for directory submission packages?
No. Those packages tend to sell volume on sites with little real traffic. The listings that do matter take an evening or two to claim yourself. Our guide to ranking on Google Maps in Ahmedabad covers what actually moves things locally.
How long before local SEO pays for itself?
Longer than paid ads. Google publishes no timeline, so treat any promised date with suspicion. In our experience the first changes worth noticing land in the second or third month, because most of month one goes on repair. Judge it on phone calls and on requests for directions to your door, and give it a quarter before you decide.
Do I need to pay for a tool as well?
Not to begin with. Tools save an agency time across many clients, which is why agencies buy them. A single business with one address can do it by hand. Search your own name, look at the top three rivals, and note what they carry that you do not. That is about an hour a month, in our experience.
